When you were a young child, did you ever visit your
grandmother and go out to play in her yard and garden? As
you’ve grown up, you may have tried to recreate that atmosphere
in hopes that your children and, one day, your grandchildren can have
the same experience. However, regardless of how great a garden
you set up, something doesn’t seem right. You can’t
seem to bring that sense of peace and contentment to your own life that
your grandmother had. If you think back, though, you may
immediately realize what’s missing: the rocking
chair. An outdoor rocking chair like your grandmother used to
have can make a big difference in your ability to relax and look out
over your work.
The adirondack rocking chair is timeless; people have had them as part of
their patio furniture for hundreds of years and will continue to
include them for hundreds more. Being able to rock back and forth
has been a comforting and soothing motion for many as far back as
history can tell. Mothers have rocked children to sleep, even
before there was an apparatus to aid them in doing so, and many a
person rocks back and forth when they get hurt and are trying to deal
with the agony. Men and women alike have sat in rocking chairs
and hummed to themselves, sewn, whittled, and watched over children and
the world from those chairs from the time they were young parents to
great old ages.
Even children adore outdoor rocking chairs, sitting in the seat that is
so oversized for their small bodies and swinging their legs vigorously
to get the chair to rock harder for them, giggling through the
experience. Little girls take their babydolls out to the chairs
and rock them, pretending to put them to sleep with the motion,
imitating life.
Now that you are a grownup with a garden of your own, it’s time
to invest in your own outdoor rocking chair. While you hope to
one day inherit your mother’s or grandmother’s, that day is
far off, so you must take the steps to choose your own. Comfort
is of the utmost importance, but you also want one that’s sturdy
and durable, able to last through the decades with you as you become
the old woman rocking on the porch. Cedar and teak are going to
be your best options.
So, as you settle into the little bit of paradise you’ve created
for yourself in imitation of those who have come before you, think
about continuing the tradition in full by adding an outdoor rocking
chair to your patio décor for a complete relaxed atmosphere.
